The Violin

Eric Benning made this Bergonzi violin in Los Angeles in 2020, basing it on a Carlo Bergonzi model. The two-piece back is gorgeous Bosnian maple from the 1930s. The two-piece top is Northern Italian spruce, also from the 1930s.

The fittings deserve a close look. Benning chose a set of carved-style boxwood fittings from Bois d’harmonie in France. So the fittings carry the same care as the body. On this 2020 Bergonzi violin, Eric Benning let the boxwood set off the maple nicely.

The tone is rich and powerful. In addition, the violin can draw out a wide range of colors and depth. The back measures 35.6 cm. Carlo Bergonzi worked in Cremona, and Benning follows his pattern closely.

Some players want color as well as volume. For them, this Eric Benning Bergonzi violin from 2020 was a strong choice. Because the wood had aged for decades, it also offered settled material. That matters to anyone who plans to play a violin for many years.

The Maker

Eric Benning grew up in a violinmaking family. His parents guided him at the bench from age 11.

He is also a third-generation luthier. That family depth gives his work a strong sense of continuity. His great-uncle, the acclaimed American maker Carl F. Becker Jr., shaped his training.

Today, as house luthier at Benning Violins, he has made more than 145 stringed instruments. Eric Benning’s 2020 Bergonzi violin is one of his later Cremonese copies. Teachers, soloists and orchestra members seek out his violins as well, including several from the LA Philharmonic.
