The Violin

Eric Benning made this Guadagnini violin in Los Angeles in 2023, taking its pattern from G.B. Guadagnini. The two-piece back is gorgeous Bosnian maple from the 1960s. The two-piece top is Northern Italian spruce, also from the 1960s.

Guadagnini was one of the great Italian makers. His work kept a distinct and personal style. That style is a favorite model for modern makers. So on this 2023 Guadagnini violin, Eric Benning follows it with care.

This violin has a rich and powerful tone. In addition, it can draw out colors and depth with ease. Players also value that balance of power and color. The back measures 35.3 cm.

For an orchestral player, that range of color matters. Therefore this Eric Benning Guadagnini violin from 2023 suited both section work and solo passages. The 1960s maple and spruce also brought decades of seasoning. That gives a new violin a settled, stable foundation. It would also serve an advanced student preparing for professional work. Few new violins offer that mix of seasoned wood and a classic Italian model.

The Maker

Eric Benning’s violins draw interest from distinguished teachers, soloists and orchestra members, including several from the LA Philharmonic.

He began making violins at age 11 under his parents’ guidance, since both of them were violinmakers. Later, his great-uncle, Carl F. Becker Jr., trained him, which makes him a third-generation luthier.

Today he serves as house luthier at Benning Violins, with over 145 handcrafted stringed instruments to his name. In 2023, Eric Benning used this Guadagnini violin to blend Italian tradition with a modern sense of tone.
