The Violin

Eric Benning made this Pressenda violin in Los Angeles in 2016, and it spent its whole life in professional hands. He based it on a model by J.F. Pressenda. The one-piece Bosnian maple back shows exceptional figure. The top is two-piece Northern Italian spruce.

A professional violinist played this instrument from the day it was new. So it never sat unused in a case. Instead, it grew with regular playing. In fact, this 2016 Pressenda violin by Eric Benning reflects years of professional use.

The sound is powerful and rich. It is also clear and precise in tone. The back measures 35.7 cm. Pressenda worked in Turin, and his violins remain a favorite model for makers today.

For the next owner, this Eric Benning Pressenda violin from 2016 offered a proven working instrument. A buyer could hear exactly how it sounds after years of work. That removes much of the guesswork of buying a new violin. It also suited a player who wants a Turin model from a living American maker.

The Maker

Eric Benning is the house luthier of Benning Violins. He began making violins at age 11 under his parents, who also made violins.

His great-uncle, Carl F. Becker Jr., later trained him. That link places Benning within the Becker school of American making. As a result, he counts as a third-generation luthier. His own style joins Italian tradition with a modern approach to tone.

Today his instruments draw teachers, soloists and orchestral players. In 2016, Eric Benning made this Pressenda violin, and it went on to prove itself on the stage.
