The Violin
Eric Benning made this Stradivari violin in Los Angeles in 2004. It came to us from a retired professional violinist. The back is one-piece Bosnian maple. The top is two-piece Northern Italian spruce.
This violin served in professional work for 14 years. As a result, it developed a beautiful, mature tone. It is rich and clear, with excellent power and projection. The back measures 35.6 cm.
Unlike his antiqued copies, this violin wears a vibrant red-orange varnish on a golden ground. The finish stays bright and fresh. Antonio Stradivari worked in Cremona, and his model remains the classic violin pattern. Here, the 2004 Stradivari violin by Eric Benning follows that pattern with a clean, confident hand.
For a player, this Eric Benning Stradivari violin from 2004 offered a rare mix. It had a modern maker’s build, yet it carried years of playing in its voice. A professional career had already opened up its sound. So the next owner could step straight onto the stage with it.
The Maker
This violin dates from an early chapter in Eric Benning’s career. In 2005, one year later, he made his last violin with his great-uncle, Carl F. Becker Jr.
That partnership shaped his work. Benning is a third-generation luthier, and the Becker school still guides his hand. So this 2004 violin comes from his years of close work in the Becker tradition.
Since then, his output has grown past 145 instruments. Distinguished teachers, soloists and orchestra members seek them out, including several from the LA Philharmonic. In 2004, Eric Benning’s Stradivari violin marked an early step on that path.
