The Violin
The Ernst Heinrich Roth firm made this violin in 1922 on a Stradivari model, early in its history in Markneukirchen. It has a two piece maple back. The varnish and antiquing are superb, so the instrument carries an old world look.
The sound is dark and rich. As a result, it suits players who prefer depth over brilliance. It also gives a warm base for chamber music. The back measures 36.2 cm.
In 1922 the firm had operated for just 20 years. Still, this violin already shows the consistent quality that made Ernst Heinrich Roth a trusted name. It also reflects the firm’s habit of modeling its violins on Cremonese masterpieces.
For a player, an Ernst Heinrich Roth violin from 1922 offers a Stradivari pattern and a dark voice. In addition, its superb varnish gives it real visual appeal. That is why this Ernst Heinrich Roth violin 1922 suits a player who wants character at a sensible level. The Ernst Heinrich Roth workshop finished this violin in 1922, and it shows the firm at its early best.
The Maker
The firm of Ernst Heinrich Roth ranked among the most prolific Markneukirchen workshops. It produced an enormous number of consistently high quality instruments in the 20th century. Roth, the son of a violin maker, founded it in 1902.
Roth also set out to fix a problem. Unscrupulous labeling ran rampant in 19th century Germany. So the Roth firm insisted on an unprecedented degree of transparency about its instruments.
The firm used at least 14 models, many of them faithful copies of Stradivari and Guarneri. Every authentic Roth bears a serial number and the “Ernst Heinrich Roth” brand inside the back. Also, a standardized label states the year and often the model.
