The Violin Bow
Branded “E. SARTORY A PARIS,” Eugène Sartory crafted this fine violin bow in Paris circa 1920. He fashioned the round stick from select pernambuco and fitted it with an ebony and ivory faceplate. Sartory mounted the ebony frog in sterling silver and decorated it with inlaid Parisian eyes, while the ebony adjuster carries a silver overlay.
This is very much a player’s bow. It offers the strength, balance, and dependable handling for which musicians celebrate Sartory’s work. As a result, it plays exceptionally well, with a stable feel on the string. It also delivers the responsiveness needed for both precise articulation and broader, sustained playing.
The Maker
Eugène Nicolas Sartory was born in Mirecourt, France, in 1871. He became one of the most celebrated French bow makers of the twentieth century. After studying with his father, he worked in Paris for Charles Peccatte and Alfred Lamy before establishing his own workshop. Since then, Sartory’s highly recognizable style has defined his legacy. He produced strong, consistent bows that musicians admired for their balance, stability, and excellent playing qualities. Leading musicians, including Eugène Ysaÿe, favored his bows, and they remain among the most sought-after examples of modern French bow making.
