The Violin

This exceptional violin is a compelling example of late 18th-century Neapolitan craftsmanship. The back, ribs, and scroll are made from quarter-cut maple with broad, faint flames, while the top is two-piece spruce with straight grain that widens gracefully toward the flanks.

Dendrochronological analysis reveals the latest rings as 1774 on the bass side and 1770 on the treble, confirming both the instrument’s authenticity and period of craftsmanship.

This fine Italian-made violin is finished in a warm, golden-brown varnish and features bold, beautifully cut f-holes characteristic of the maker’s unique style. Fitted with rosewood “Hill Style” fittings, it presents a refined and harmonious aesthetic.

Originally conceived and crafted as a small viola, likely around 37–38 cm, the instrument was later tastefully reduced to its current dimensions. Despite this early adaptation, it retains the character, quality, and unmistakable voice of one of Naples’ finest makers, offering a rare opportunity for the fine violinist, or collectors of fine Italian violins, to own an important and notable instrument.

The Maker

Ferdinand Gagliano (1738–1804) was a master luthier of the renowned Gagliano family in Naples and the most prolific maker of its third generation. Trained primarily by his uncle Gennaro rather than his father Nicolò, he developed a distinctive style that helped define the Neapolitan School of violin making in the 18th century. His instruments are admired for their elegant craftsmanship, warm tonal quality, and signature golden varnish. Though part of a deeply collaborative family tradition, Ferdinand often worked independently, setting up his own workshop and carving out a unique legacy. Today, his violins are highly sought after by musicians and collectors around the world.
