The Violin

From the first note, this 1927 Ferdinando Garimberti violin reveals an exceptional depth and richness of sound. Its voice is full and resonant, with tremendous warmth and color that give the instrument a particularly expressive character.

The one-piece, quarter-cut maple back displays striking medium-wide flames ascending from the treble to the bass side, with matching maple used for the ribs and scroll. The two-piece spruce top features broad to medium grain. A beautifully warm golden orange-brown varnish over a golden ground completes this distinguished example of Garimberti’s early Milanese work.

The Maker

Ferdinando Garimberti (1894–1982) was one of the leading figures of the twentieth-century Milanese school of violin making. After studying with Romeo and Riccardo Antoniazzi, he worked with Giuseppe Pedrazzini and Leandro Bisiach before establishing his own workshop in Milan around 1920. Garimberti became renowned for his precise craftsmanship, elegant workmanship, and exceptional choice of wood. His instruments received numerous awards during his career, and from 1963 to 1966 he taught at the International School of Violin Making in Cremona.
