The Violin

Fernando Solar Gonzalez made this Spanish violin in 1976. By then he had run his own workshop for nearly three decades. So it comes from a maker in his full maturity.

Gonzalez was about 55 years old that year. He had trained in Madrid and worked with many kinds of stringed instruments. As a result, this violin by Fernando Solar Gonzalez reflects broad experience at the bench.

Spanish violins offer a different path from the familiar German and French schools. Because of that, a Fernando Solar Gonzalez violin offers something different for a collector. It also connects to a workshop that his family still keeps alive.

For a player, this 1976 violin offers a link to a respected Spanish maker. It suits someone curious about instruments beyond the usual schools. In addition, it carries the story of a long family career. That is why this Fernando Solar Gonzalez violin stands out among Spanish instruments of its time.

The Maker

Fernando Solar Gonzalez came from Asturias, Spain, where he started life in 1921. In 1943 he moved to Madrid. There he apprenticed with Santos Hernandez, a local guitar maker.

Gonzalez soon began building many kinds of stringed instruments. Then, in 1948, he established his own workshop. He worked there for decades before his death in 2011.

His children Fernando and Mercedes continue the work at his workshop in Spain. The younger Fernando also makes instruments from recycled material. He builds them for the Orquesta de Instrumentos Reciclados de Cateura in Asuncion, Paraguay. Still, he keeps making classically modeled wood instruments as well.
