The Violin

Franciscus Marie Pupunatus made this Swiss violin in 1839, so the Pupunatus violin dates from his best period. It remains a superb example of his finest work. The back measures 35.6 cm.

Condition is excellent today. As a result, the violin still shows the care he put into his strongest years. It also gives a clear picture of his mature style, at its peak.

Pupunatus made about 345 instruments in total, and most were violins. However, not every year produced work of this level. That is why a Pupunatus violin from 1839 stands out within his output.

For a player or collector, this 1839 Pupunatus violin offers rare Swiss craftsmanship from Lausanne. It suits someone who values history and a maker’s best work. In addition, its excellent condition makes it a practical instrument as well as a historical one. So the Pupunatus violin of 1839 appeals to buyers who want both.

The Maker

Franciscus Marie Pupunatus began his woodworking career as a cabinet maker in Switzerland. That background meant years of close work with wood. Later he turned those skills to instruments, and the change suited him well.

He set up as a violinmaker in the town of Lausanne. There he quickly became one of the best makers in his area. Also, he kept working at the bench for decades, building a large and varied output.

His career ended in 1868. By then he had made 300 violins, 25 cellos and 20 violas. Today, players and collectors value that body of Swiss work for its quality. This 1839 violin shows why.
