The Violin Bow

This bow is an exceptional example of the maker’s work from circa 1830–40. The stick is fashioned from fine swartzia wood, displaying a deep, chocolate-brown color with an elegant surface and natural luster. The ebony frog is silver mounted and fitted with a later silver ferrule, with a mother-of-pearl shield inlaid on each side. The button is a non-original, one-piece replacement made of bone. In the hand, the bow plays comfortably, drawing a free, even tone with ease and consistency across the stick.

The Maker

François Jude Gaulard was a French bow maker active during the early 19th century, working at a formative moment in the development of the modern bow. His work reflects the transitional style between classical and later Tourte-influenced models, with careful attention to balance, craftsmanship, and material selection. Gaulard favored elegant, understated fittings and finely finished sticks, qualities that have made his bows respected for their musical reliability and refined playing characteristics among players and collectors alike.
