The Maker

François Nicolas Voirin (1833–1885) is regarded as one of the greatest French bow makers of the 19th century. Trained in the Paris workshop of Jean Baptiste Vuillaume, he developed a refined style that combined elegance, precision, and playability. Often called the “modern Tourte,” Voirin introduced a slimmer head and shaft that offered responsiveness and control, setting the standard for later French bows. His work is prized by musicians for its balance and clarity, and by collectors for its beauty and historical importance.
