The Bow

Francois Peccatte made this fine violin bow circa the 1850s. The bow features nickel silver mounts and a stick of dark, dense Pernambuco wood. It remains in excellent condition today and weighs 59.5 grams. Paul Childs has certified the bow, adding further confidence to its attribution.

The Maker

Francois Peccatte was born on March 10, 1821, the younger brother of the celebrated bow maker Dominique Peccatte. In 1840, he moved to Paris to join his brother and other prominent makers working within the city’s thriving bow trade. There, he developed his craft alongside some of the most respected names in French bow making of the era.

Francois Peccatte’s career, however, was cut short. He died on October 30, 1855, at just 34 years old, following a period of ill health. As a result, his surviving output remains relatively rare compared to that of his longer-lived contemporaries. Despite his brief career, his bows are valued today for their craftsmanship and connection to one of the most important families in French bow making history.
