The Bow
Francois Peccatte made this ebony violin bow around 1850. It stands as an exceptionally pure example of his work. Unusually, the stick uses Amourette wood.
The bow carries nickel and ebony mountings. Bernard Millant certified it. In addition, it weighs 62.8 grams. As a result, this 1850 Francois Peccatte ebony violin bow has real substance in the hand.
The Maker
Francois Peccatte lived from 1821 to 1855. He was the younger brother of Dominique Peccatte. First, he apprenticed near Mirecourt. Then, around 1840, he joined his brother in Paris.
Dominique shaped his style, which features square, strong heads. Later, he returned to Mirecourt in 1842 and kept a separate workshop. In 1852, he moved to Paris to work for Vuillaume. Sadly, ill health took his life in 1855, at age 34. So a Francois Peccatte ebony violin bow from 1850 captures his short but productive career.
