The Cello
Crafted on a Stradivari model, this cello was made in Los Angeles in 1914, representing the earliest years of fine violin making in the city. The two-piece maple back displays broad, descending flame, matched by the ribs, while the spruce top shows straight grain that widens gently toward the flanks. A warm amber varnish over a golden ground lends a rich glow, and a carved shield at the button bears the inscription “AD 1914,” adding a distinctive and personal touch.
This cello possesses a beautiful, centered voice with warmth, clarity, and depth. Its sound is full and resonant, offering an easy sense of power with graceful projection that carries effortlessly in any setting.
The Maker
Fritz Pulpaneck was a Prussian-born violin maker whose work became closely associated with early 20th-century Los Angeles. Born in 1878, he trained in Berlin, worked in Leipzig and Düsseldorf, and immigrated to the United States in 1904 before establishing himself in Los Angeles in 1911. Pulpaneck was especially known for his refined copies of Stradivari and Guarneri models, finished in oil or spirit varnish. His instruments are still appreciated for their craftsmanship, strong tonal character, and historical regional significance
