The Violin

This Gaetano Gadda violin dates from 1939. It carries the Mantuan tradition forward from Stefano Scarampella, Gadda’s only teacher. It also shows the precision that set Gadda’s work apart. Still, it keeps the expressive character of the Scarampella school.

The tone is rich and penetrating. Fine musicians look for exactly this kind of sound, because it has the power to fill a concert hall. The back measures 36 cm.

The date matters here. Gadda made this Gaetano Gadda violin just before the 1940s, when he began to move toward his own models. So the instrument sits at a turning point in his career, between teacher and independent maker.

For players, a Gaetano Gadda violin means a modern Italian instrument with a direct line to Scarampella. Its sound can lead a quartet or carry a solo line with ease. In addition, it offers the cleaner workmanship that Gadda brought to the style.

The Maker

Gaetano Gadda was the sole pupil and true follower of Stefano Scarampella. He began learning the trade in 1919. After that, the two men worked side by side during Scarampella’s later years in Mantua.

Scarampella died in 1925. Gadda then continued to make instruments in his teacher’s style. However, he gradually moved in a new direction. From the 1940s he used a model reminiscent of Guarneri for his violins and a Balestrieri model for his cellos.

As a result, his work carries more precision than Scarampella’s. Today, collectors value a Gaetano Gadda violin as a direct link to Scarampella. They also see Gadda as one of the most distinctive voices in modern Italian making. Players also value it for its strong, focused sound.
