The Violin

Giorgio Gatti made this violin circa the 1920s, and it remains in excellent condition today. The instrument is labeled “Pressenda” inside, reflecting the Piedmontese tradition Gatti trained within, though the violin is a genuine work of his own hand. The craftsmanship follows the highest Italian standards, built on a flattish Stradivari model. The violin produces a superb tone, rich and powerful in sound. It has a back length of 35.5 cm, and Chris Reuning has certified the instrument.

The Maker

Giorgio Gatti arrived in Turin in 1890, where Enrico Marchetti likely guided him directly in the art of violin making. Gatti trained within the Piedmontese tradition established by Giovanni Francesco Pressenda and his fellow predecessors. However, he showed no hesitation in departing from that established style, adding his own personal touch to the instruments he built.

As a result, Gatti’s violins carry both the technical foundation of the Piedmontese school and a distinct individual character. This combination continues to make his instruments notable among collectors and musicians interested in the broader Turin violin making tradition.
