The Violin
Made in 1907, this George Langton Dykes violin combines richly figured maple with a warm, skillfully antiqued appearance. The two-piece, quarter-cut maple back displays broad, even flames descending from the center joint, while the ribs and scroll are fashioned from maple with a tighter, deeper figure. Its two-piece spruce top has narrow grain at the center that gradually widens toward the flanks. An orange-brown varnish rests over a golden ground.
The violin possesses an exceptionally dark and rich tone, with remarkable depth, warmth, and complexity. Its voice is full-bodied and resonant across the instrument, offering a truly spectacular tonal character that immediately captures the listener’s attention.
The Maker
George Langton Dykes was an English violin maker born in Leeds in 1884. The son and pupil of respected violin expert and dealer Harry Dykes, he began making instruments at an unusually young age and quickly demonstrated considerable promise. His work reflects the strong traditions of English violin making, with careful craftsmanship, attractive antiquing, and a thoughtful selection of wood. Although his career was cut short by his death in 1922, Dykes produced instruments that remain admired for their individual character and strong tonal qualities.
