The Violin
George Wulme Hudson made this violin in 1930 as a copy of a 1750 Januarius Gagliano. The instrument has a back length of 35.7 cm and remains in good condition. A few well executed repairs appear on the top, visible in the accompanying photographs. The violin produces a very powerful and rich tone.
The Maker
George Wulme Hudson was born in 1882 and became one of England’s most versatile and talented violin makers. Although his violin making career began relatively late, Hudson proved remarkably prolific, ultimately producing over 800 instruments throughout his career.
Hudson earned recognition as one of the world’s finest copyists of the great Italian masters, including Stradivari, Bergonzi, and Guarneri. His skill in closely replicating these historic models, while still producing instruments with genuine tonal character, secured his reputation among the most accomplished English makers of his era.
This violin, modeled after a Gagliano original, reflects that same skill and attention to detail that defined Hudson’s celebrated career.
