The Violin
A refined example by this English maker, this violin features a two-piece maple back with tight, irregular flames running horizontally across the plate, complemented by matching maple ribs. The scroll is carved from similarly figured maple, and the neck has been professionally grafted. Its one-piece spruce top shows straight grain that gradually widens toward the treble side. A warm orange-brown varnish over a golden ground has been beautifully antiqued. Finished with boxwood and ebony fittings, the instrument remains in gorgeous condition and offers a sweet, colorful tone.
The Maker
George Wulme-Hudson (1882–1952) was an English violin maker active in London during the first half of the twentieth century. He worked during a period of renewed interest in classical Italian models among British makers and established a steady reputation within the London trade. His instruments were exhibited and sold in England and abroad, and he maintained an active workshop practice throughout his career. Wulme-Hudson’s work reflects the continuity of the English violin-making tradition in the years between the World Wars.
