The Viola
This German viola dates to circa 1890. It is a lovely instrument with a strong presence. In fact, its look and its voice both stand out.
The viola bears a Wilhelm Jaura label. However, that label appears to be fictitious. Such labels appear on many older instruments. So we describe this one by its origin instead: a German viola from the 1890s.
The back uses gorgeous one-piece, slab cut maple. Meanwhile, a stunning varnish covers the body. Together, they give this German viola from 1890 a striking appearance.
The sound is dark and powerful. In addition, the tone feels balanced and resonant. Therefore, a player who wants depth and power may enjoy this kind of voice.
The back measures 16 5/8 in, or 42.3 cm. Meanwhile, the string length runs 14 3/4 in, or 37.5 cm. As a result, this is a large viola. A player with a longer reach will likely feel most at home on it. Today, this 1890 German viola has found a new home.
The Maker
The maker of this viola remains unknown. Even so, its features point to German work from the 1890s. For this reason, we list it under the German School.
German workshops produced many violas in the late 19th century. Some shops placed fanciful labels inside their instruments. Still, the build and the materials tell us more than any label. In this case, the maple, the varnish and the sound all show a careful hand. Above all, this German viola from 1890 rewards a close look and a careful listen.
