The Violin

Giorgio Serafin made this violin in Venice around 1750. It reflects the graceful style of the Venetian school. The one-piece semi-slab maple back carries a narrow, consistent curl, and the ribs match it. The plainer scroll adds subtle contrast.

Its one-piece spruce top shows narrow grain that widens toward the bass. Also, a rich dark orange-red varnish over a golden-brown ground gives a warm, aged glow. The back measures 35.2 cm.

The voice sounds refined and complex. It also feels warm, clear and responsive. Because the violin survives in exceptionally fine condition, it stands as a notable example of Venetian craft.

For a professional, a Giorgio Serafin violin suits the soloist, the chamber musician or the orchestral player. In addition, it gave collectors a rare chance at a fine Italian violin of this period. As is true of the best Venetian work, its beauty matches its sound.

The Maker

Giorgio Serafin was the nephew and successor of Santo Serafin. He trained first with his uncle. Later, he studied with Domenico Montagnana and married his daughter.

In time, Giorgio directed the renowned Venetian workshop known as Alla Cremona. His instruments blend the elegance and precision of Santo with the bolder, more rustic character of Montagnana.

Today, performers and collectors prize his work. They value its rich, projecting tone and distinctive look. So every Giorgio Serafin violin stands among the crown achievements of the Venetian school.
