The Violin
Giovanni Baptista Grancino made this violin in Milan around 1710 to 1715. It comes from one of the leading Italian violin families. So it carries the heritage of the Milanese school into the early 18th century.
The sound is beautifully warm and rich. That warmth gives the player a full, rounded voice. As a result, it rewards both slow melodies and lyric passages.
The ribs and scroll are later reproductions. However, that detail makes the instrument a great value for musicians. A player gains an early Italian violin by Giovanni Baptista Grancino at a more approachable level.
For a musician, this instrument offers Milanese craft and a warm tone. It suits a serious player who wants an authentic Italian voice. In addition, two certificates document the Giovanni Baptista Grancino name on this violin.
The Maker
Giovanni Baptista Grancino, also spelled Giovanni Battista, came into the world in 1673. His father, Giovanni Grancino, led violin making in 17th century Milan. The son grew up inside that busy trade.
Giovanni Battista assisted his father in the family workshop on the Contrada Larga. That shop enjoyed real success. In fact, the son probably made much of its output by the end of the century.
Today, players value the Grancino name for its Milanese character. Because father and son worked so closely, experts study their hands with care. That is why certificates matter so much for this family.
Certification
William E. Hill & Sons certified this violin in 1953. Later, Jean-Jacques Rampal issued a second certificate in 2023. Together, the two documents span seventy years of expert opinion.
