The Cello
This distinguished, petite Grancino cello combines comfortable proportions with a noble and powerful voice. Its mainly one-piece, slab-cut poplar back displays pronounced year rings that create a topographical effect. Original wings mark the upper and lower bouts. Refined double-scribed purfling finishes the back. A small square fill in the upper back traditionally links the instrument to possible use in religious processions.
The four-piece spruce top ranges from fine to broader grain and features attractive hazel-spruce markings. A warm, golden-brown varnish has developed a luminous patina. The scroll stands out for its flat heel and narrow, beautifully cut volute.
Despite its petite size, the cello produces remarkable depth and projection. The C string is warm and authoritative. The A string carries with exceptional clarity and focus.
The Cello of Ray Kelley
Raymond “Ray” Kelley purchased this Grancino during the 1960s while a member of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. It accompanied him on the orchestra’s historic eight-week 1967 world tour under Zubin Mehta, with performances throughout Europe, India, and Iran.
Kelley later became one of Los Angeles’ most accomplished studio cellists. He served as principal cellist for The Simpsons for 28 years. He performed on numerous films, television productions, and recordings, including Jonathan Livingston Seagull, Frank Zappa’s Freak Out!, Neil Diamond’s Hot August Night, and albums by Earth, Wind & Fire and other major artists.
Kelley’s orchestral and studio career carried this Grancino to audiences around the world. Although most listeners never knew its name, millions have heard its voice. It remained Kelley’s trusted companion for more than six decades, a relationship his wife fondly described as that of “best friends.”
