The Violin
Giovanni Francesco Pressenda made this violin in 1827. It remains in excellent condition today and features a beautiful one piece back of highly flamed maple. The craftsmanship on display here reflects the qualities that have kept Pressenda’s instruments highly sought after for centuries. The violin has a back length of 35.4 cm.
The Maker
Giovanni Francesco Pressenda is widely considered the father, and perhaps the finest maker, of the modern Turin school. For many years, experts assumed he trained under Storioni. However, a more thorough comparison of their instruments does not support that theory. It is now considered more likely that French makers trained Pressenda in Turin during the 1820s before he opened his own workshop.
As a result, French influence appears strongly in Pressenda’s early work. His preference for Stradivari models aligns with the Parisian fashion of the period, yet significant variation across his output suggests an ongoing search for a definitive personal style. This early violin captures Pressenda during that formative period, when French technique and Italian tradition converged into the beginnings of his mature, highly regarded voice.
