The Violin
Giovanni Francesco Pressenda made this violin. It stands as a stunning example of Italian workmanship and heritage, offering a powerful, rich tone that is very easy to bring out, making it both a beautiful collector’s piece and a soloist’s delight. The violin has a back length of 35.6 cm.
The Maker
Giovanni Francesco Pressenda claimed to have learned the art of violin making in Cremona, spending his first years working in Alba and Carmagnola. In 1817, he moved to Turin with his wife to work for Lété-Pillement. Shortly after Lété-Pillement’s passing, Pressenda established his own workshop.
Unique to Pressenda’s style was his varnish and application method, a technique none of his successors were able to fully emulate. After 1829, he began developing his own model and continued in that manner for the remainder of his career. Pressenda passed away in 1854, having become one of the most prominent makers of the Turin school.
