The Maker
Born in 1637, Giovanni Grancino ranks among the finest makers of the Milanese school. His father Andrea likely made violins as well. Perhaps even his grandfather Francesco did too. So violin making ran deep in the family.
Giovanni also had a brother named Francesco. Experts link much of the family’s early work to the two brothers. However, evidence of Francesco’s role remains scant.
Many Grancino labels bear the segno della corona. They also give the address of his workshop on the Contrada Larga in Milan. He stayed there for most of his life, building violins and many cellos of superior quality. Later, his son Giovanni Battista assisted him in that shop.
Certification
Reuning & Son Violins has certified this violin. Their certificate confirms Giovanni Grancino as its maker. For a buyer, that firm’s name carries real weight.
