The Viola

This Hans Nebel viola, crafted by the esteemed German-American luthier, is in excellent condition and offers a gorgeous sound with rich overtones and strong projection. Measuring 16 1/8 inches, it’s comfortable to play and features a striking two-piece maple back with medium flames and similar scroll and ribs. Finished with a beautiful golden-red varnish, this viola reflects Nebel’s skilled craftsmanship from his Mittenwald and Philadelphia workshops, making it an ideal choice for musicians seeking both tonal depth and visual appeal.

The Maker

Johannes “Hans” Nebel Sr. was a German-American violin maker born in Mittenwald, Germany, in 1892. He trained at the Mittenwald School of Violin Making, graduating in 1906, and worked with luthiers in Vienna and Stuttgart before moving to the U.S. in 1922. After a stint with Rudolf Wurlitzer in Ohio and New York, he opened his own workshop in Philadelphia in 1926. Nebel later returned to Mittenwald, where he employed over 40 violin makers and continued crafting instruments until his death in 1979, leaving a legacy of skilled craftsmanship across two continents.
