The Maker
Helmut Ellersiek was born in Rostock, Germany in 1886. At just fourteen years old, he began his violin making apprenticeship under Ernst Kreul in Markneukirchen, a town long recognized as a center of German instrument making. There, he developed the technical foundation that would shape his career.
In 1927, Ellersiek emigrated to the United States and continued his violin making career in Los Angeles. He carried forward the meticulous training he received in Germany, producing instruments valued for their craftsmanship and rich tonal character. His work reflects the strong tradition of German violin making, adapted and continued within an American context.
