The Violin

Richly figured maple gives this Isidore Délunet violin a handsome and distinctive appearance. The one-piece, quarter-cut back features medium flames descending from the treble to the bass side, while tighter-flamed maple was selected for the ribs and scroll. Black-painted chamfers provide an elegant contrast to the carving of the scroll.

The two-piece spruce top displays straight, fairly even grain. A red-brown varnish over a yellow ground is enhanced by a dark craquelure beneath the surface, giving the violin a beautifully textured and mature character.

Tonally, the violin offers excellent projection while maintaining considerable warmth and clarity. Its strong, focused voice carries easily without becoming harsh, making it well suited to a player seeking both power and tonal richness.

The Maker

Nicolas Isidore Délunet was born in Darney, France, in 1838 and later worked as a violin maker in Mirecourt. Though details of his training remain unknown, he is believed to have supplied instrument necks to prominent Parisian workshops, including Gand and Bernardel. Délunet also operated his own workshop and trained several apprentices, including his son, Auguste Léon Délunet, who later became an important restorer at W. E. Hill & Sons in London. Isidore Délunet died in Mirecourt in 1897.
