The Violin
Eric Benning made this violin in 2012 at his workshop in Los Angeles. Our catalog lists the maker as Eric T. Benning. It carries the name of a maker whose family has shaped violins for three generations.
Benning trained in the Becker school, and that heritage runs through his instruments. So a 2012 violin from Eric Benning brings a buyer into a living American tradition. That tradition reaches back to one of the most acclaimed makers the country has produced.
His work also looks to the Italian masters. However, he approaches tone in a modern way, and that balance marks every instrument from his bench. This Eric Benning violin, dated 2012, belongs to that steady body of work.
For players, a violin from a working house luthier offers a direct link to its maker. Eric Benning made this 2012 violin at the same bench where he works today. For collectors, this 2012 violin by Eric Benning marks a clear point in his career. That is why it deserves a place in any survey of his work.
The Maker
Eric T. Benning is the house luthier of Benning Violins in Los Angeles. His passion for violin making began at age 11, under the guidance of his violinmaking parents.
As a third-generation luthier, he trained with the acclaimed American maker Carl F. Becker Jr., his great-uncle. That training gave him a deep grounding in the Italian master traditions. He pairs that grounding with a modern approach to tone, so his violins feel rooted but never dated.
Today his instruments reach teachers, soloists and orchestra members, including several LA Philharmonic players. In addition, his count now stands at more than 145 handcrafted stringed instruments.
