The Makers
Charles Adolphe Gand and Charles Nicolas Eugène Gand worked together as Gand frères. They trained under their father, Charles François Gand, and later succeeded him. So the brothers carried his Paris workshop into a new generation.
The brothers made a fair number of beautifully finished works with considerable richness of tone. They also served as appointed repairers to the King and the Conservatoire. That role placed them at the center of musical life in Paris.
In 1855 they took a first class medal at the Paris Exhibition. Then, in 1862, came the decoration of Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur. Today, any violin from Gand frères still enjoys the highest esteem among players.
