Gand made this Charles Adolphe Gand violin at age 36, in the middle of his career. By then his family name already carried real weight in the Paris trade. As a result, the instrument reflects the confidence of a mature maker.

For players, a Charles Adolphe Gand violin offers a classic French voice with clarity and focus. It speaks cleanly in chamber music and in solo work. Because it has stayed in excellent condition, it also keeps its value as a collectible piece.

The Maker

Charles Adolphe Gand was born in Paris in 1812. He was the son and pupil of Charles Francois Gand. He then continued to work under his family’s prestigious name.

Later, the French king and the Paris Conservatoire both appointed him as their violin repairer. That honor shows the esteem his work earned in his lifetime.

His craftsmanship and varnish helped carry the Gand workshop to the center of the Paris trade. Over time, the firm became Gand and Bernardel. Today, players and collectors of fine French instruments still seek out a Charles Adolphe Gand violin. They also see it as a benchmark for the Paris school of the 19th century.
