The Violin

Jago Peternella made this violin in 1929 while still working in Venice, prior to his emigration to the United States. The instrument has a back length of 36.6 cm and comes directly from the Peternella family, adding a layer of documented provenance. It remains in excellent condition today and produces a powerful, rich tone. A Kenneth Warren certificate is available upon request.

The Maker

Jago Peternella was born in Venice in 1886. He built his early career in Italy, working in a style closely associated with Rugeri Degani, one of the leading Venetian makers of the era. Peternella’s instruments from this period reflect fine craftsmanship and careful selection of materials, hallmarks of the Venetian tradition he trained within.

In 1934, Peternella emigrated to the United States, where he continued his career as a violin maker. However, this particular instrument predates that move and represents his earlier Venetian period, when his work was most directly shaped by the Degani school of craftsmanship.

Instruments from Peternella’s Venice years are valued today for their tonal richness and connection to a well documented and respected line of Italian makers.
