The Viola
This Jago Peternella viola offers a smooth, easy-playing response with attractive color in the sound and good projection. Its voice is warm and expressive, with an even character that speaks comfortably across all registers. The two-piece maple back displays medium flames descending from the center joint and is branded near the button with the maker’s stamp. Matching maple is used for the ribs and scroll, while the two-piece spruce top has straight, medium-width grain that broadens toward the flanks. Finished in a warm orange-brown varnish over a golden ground, the model draws loosely from Guarneri with a distinct Degani influence.
The Maker
Jago Peternella (1886–1970) was an Italian violin maker, violinist, and versatile craftsman originally from the Verona region. His earliest known instruments date from the early twentieth century, and he is believed to have studied with Giulio Degani in Venice. That influence is evident in his choice of models, materials, and distinctive workmanship. Peternella later emigrated to the United States, working in several American cities. His instruments are admired for their fine craftsmanship, attractive wood, and strong tonal qualities.
