The Violin
A fine example of the work of this early American maker, this violin features a one-piece American maple back with medium flame running from the treble to the bass side, matched with similarly flamed maple ribs and scroll. The two-piece spruce top is finely cut with narrow, even grain. It is finished in a warm orange-brown varnish over a yellow ground. This gorgeous instrument possesses a bright and brilliant voice, offering the violinist strong projection capabilities as well as a focused sound that carries well and responds quickly under the bow.
The Maker
James Reynold Carlisle (1886–1962) was an American violin maker born in Ashland, Kentucky. Largely self-taught, he built instruments and experimented heavily with varnish, developing a dark red formula he called “Italian sunshine varnish.” After meeting Rudolf Wurlitzer in 1914, he became closely associated with the Wurlitzer firm in Cincinnati, making and restoring violins there for much of his career. He also appears in the early film The Violin Speaks.
