The Maker
James Tubbs is one of the most important English bow makers, often called “The English Tourte.” Born in London, he trained under his father before working with W.E. Hill & Sons in the 1860s. Their partnership ended in 1870, and Tubbs went on to craft over 5,000 bows independently.
His bows are known for their round sticks, thick metal fittings, and elegant craftsmanship, with the finest examples featuring engraved gold mounts. Highly sought after by musicians and collectors, his work has been widely copied and remains among the most prized in bow-making history.
