The Violin

This exquisite violin, number 1391, is an exceptional example from one of the most celebrated 19th-century French makers. Currently in excellent condition, it features a striking one-piece maple back with horizontal flames, irregularly figured maple ribs, and a finely carved one-piece spruce top with hazel spruce markings. Finished in a rich red-brown varnish over a golden ground, the violin bears the maker’s internal signature on the back upper treble bout, brand stamps on both plates by the upper block, and the penciled number 1391 in the center of the back and by the maker’s signature.

Renowned for its tonal qualities, this instrument produces a powerful, colorful and rich sound with remarkable resonance and beautiful overtones, ideal for both concert performance and discerning collectors. Provenance includes the 1961 sale to the Tenkoff family. A current dendrochronological assessment was completed by Peter Ratcliff and places the latest date for the wood at A.D. 1819 with significant matches to many other fine Vuillaume instruments. A full condition report is also available upon request.

The Maker

Master French violinmaker Jean Baptiste Vuillaume revolutionized 19th-century violin craftsmanship from his Paris workshop. His exceptional ability to create fine violins, particularly his masterful replications of Stradivari and Guarneri instruments, led to the production of over 3,000 instruments sought after by distinguished violinists worldwide. His acquisition of Luigi Tarisio’s collection, including Stradivari’s ‘Messiah’ violin, cemented his legendary status. Today, Vuillaume’s fine violins are coveted for their powerful projection and warm, rich tonal qualities, representing the perfect fusion of historical craftsmanship with innovative techniques. His instruments remain highly prized among professional musicians and collectors alike.
