The Maker
Jean-Jacques Millant (1928–1998) was a distinguished French bow maker known for his craftsmanship in the tradition of Dominique Peccatte. The son of violin maker Roger Millant, he apprenticed with the Morizot Brothers in Mirecourt from 1946 to 1948 before working alongside his uncle, Roger and Max Millant, in Paris. In 1950, he established his own workshop, where he developed a reputation for producing bows of exceptional quality, balancing strength, flexibility, and responsiveness. Awarded the prestigious Un des Meilleurs Ouvriers de France in 1970, Millant’s bows gained widespread recognition among professional musicians. His work, often compared to Peccatte’s, remains highly sought after for its superior playability and refined craftsmanship, securing his place as one of the most important bow makers of the late 20th century.
