The Violin Bow

This fine French bow was made in Mirecourt, France circa 1920. It features a round stick of light pernambuco, an ebony frog mounted in nickel silver with pearl eyes, an ebony and ivory faceplate, and an ebony button fitted with two nickel rings and a pearl eye. The stick is highly unusual, showing a tight wave that runs the full length, likely the result of an uncommon wood choice or workshop technique. While not physically light, the bow feels light in the hand due to its excellent balance, offering an articulate, responsive feel with easy control. Well suited to light playing or fiddling, it is in excellent condition and shows strong character and personality.

The Maker

Jérôme Thibouville-Lamy (often known as JTL) was one of the most influential French musical instrument firms of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Based in Mirecourt, the historic center of French lutherie, the company produced violins, violas, cellos, and a large number of bows made by skilled workshop craftsmen. JTL bows are recognized for their solid construction, dependable playability, and practical designs, making them enduring examples of French workshop bow making.
