The Cello

This cello is an excellent example from the Schult’s workshop, crafted on a graceful Stradivari model. The two-piece maple back displays attractive, even flame and is paired with a well-matched spruce top. The workmanship is confident and balanced, resulting in an instrument that responds easily under the bow. Tonally, the cello offers a clear, rich, and powerful sound with strong projection, making it well suited for orchestral playing, chamber music, and advanced study.

The Maker

J.H. Schult was a Northern German violin maker who established his workshop in Lübeck in 1896. In 1907, he was appointed luthier to the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg. Known for fine workmanship and carefully selected materials, Schult received medals for his instruments in both Turin and Schwerin. His career ended abruptly in 1942 when wartime bombing destroyed his workshop. He died in Lübeck in 1949.
