Its smaller size belies a deep, rich tone with impressive projection, offering a warm, resonant sound ideal for both solo and chamber music. The viola boasts a striking one-piece back with vivid flame, enhanced by elegant purfling that showcases Betts’ meticulous artistry. This rare instrument blends ease of play, visual splendor, and a captivating voice, making it a standout choice for discerning violists.
The Maker
John Edward Betts (1755–1823) was a leading English luthier and dealer in late 18th-century London. Trained under Richard Duke, he later purchased Duke’s business and established his own shop by 1781, employing top makers such as Vincenzo Panormo. Renowned for importing fine Italian instruments and promoting Stradivari’s reputation, Betts oversaw production ranging from affordable violins to excellent Stradivari copies. He trained his brother Arthur, who inherited the firm in 1823; the shop continued specializing in historic reproductions until closing in 1867.
