Its luminous varnish, a transparent golden-amber laid over a golden ground, highlights the wood’s natural beauty with warmth and depth.

Built upon an Amati inspired pattern, this cello pairs refined craftsmanship with a warm, rich tone. Its sound is resonant and well-balanced, offering both depth and clarity, making it a versatile instrument for a wide range of playing styles.

The Maker

John Carter was a respected English violin maker active in London during the late 18th century. He was known for his finely crafted instruments modeled after the Amati and Cremonese schools. Early in his career, he worked in the tradition of Richard Duke, later collaborating with renowned dealer John Betts. His instruments are notable for their elegant workmanship, golden-brown varnish, and refined tone. Though relatively rare, Carter’s violins and cellos are valued for their quality and place within the English school of violin making.
