The Violin

A rich and resonant violin by contemporary American maker Jordan Hess, Salt Lake City, 2020, built on a Guarneri model. It features a one-piece maple back with medium-wide flames and small knots and natural imperfections that ascend from the treble to the bass side, with matching maple ribs and scroll. The two-piece spruce top shows medium-wide grain, and the instrument is finished in an orange-brown varnish over a yellow ground, giving a highly textured, tactile appearance. Scroll chamfers and miters are painted black, complemented by boxwood fittings. The violin offers a full, dark-toned voice with excellent clarity, even response, and smooth string-to-string balance.

The Maker

Jordan Hess is an American violin maker originally from Indiana and now based in Salt Lake City, Utah. He began making instruments at a young age and apprenticed at Indianapolis Violins before attending the Violin Making School of America. Hess later worked with Salt Lake City maker John Young before establishing his own workshop. His instruments are built using traditional Cremonese methods, with models influenced by Stradivari, Amati, and Guarneri del Gesù. He is particularly interested in acoustics, geometric design, and creating instruments with strong tonal character and playability.
