The Maker

Joseph Alfred Lamy (père) (1850–1919) was a leading French bow maker whose work helped define modern bow design. Trained in Mirecourt under Charles Claude Nicolas Husson, he later worked with François Nicolas Voirin in Paris. After Voirin’s death in 1885, Lamy opened his own workshop, refining the Vuillaume–Voirin model into a slightly heavier, more stable style. His bows, branded “A. LAMY A PARIS,” earned major awards and influenced makers like Eugène Sartory. His son Hippolyte Camille carried on the legacy after his death.
