The Violin Bow
This Joseph Alfred Lamy bow, with a frog and button crafted by his son, Georges Lamy, is a fine example of the family’s bow-making tradition. The bow and frog are a later pairing, complementing each other in both form and function. Silver and ebony mounted, it offers a refined playing experience—light in the hand, delicately responsive, yet with enough strength to maintain clarity and control. Its bouncy character makes it well-suited for nuanced articulation, striking a balance between flexibility and stability.
The Maker
Joseph Alfred Lamy (1850–1919), known as Lamy Père, was a renowned French bow maker from Mirecourt, France. He began his apprenticeship in 1862 with Charles Claude Nicolas Husson and later worked for François Nicolas Voirin in Paris from 1877 to 1885. Following Voirin’s death, Lamy opened his own workshop in 1885 at 34 rue du Faubourg Poissonière.
Lamy played a significant role in the development of French bowmaking during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His work was influenced by Jean Baptiste Vuillaume, and he continued the traditions established by Voirin. Lamy’s bows were known for their increased strength and volume, with a style that evolved to balance delicacy with a more robust feel.
