The Maker

Joseph Alfred Lamy (père) (1850–1919) was a renowned French bow maker whose craftsmanship helped shape modern bow-making. Born in Mirecourt, he apprenticed under Charles Claude Nicolas Husson before working with François Nicolas Voirin in Paris. After Voirin’s death in 1885, Lamy established his own workshop, refining the Vuillaume-Voirin model into a slightly heavier, more balanced design. His bows, branded “A. LAMY A PARIS,” were highly regarded and influenced makers like Eugène Sartory. Awarded silver and gold medals at the 1889 Paris Exposition, Lamy remained independent, later working alongside his sons. After his death, his son Hippolyte Camille continued his legacy, cementing Lamy père’s place among history’s finest bow makers.
