The Violin Bow

A fine and exceptionally responsive bow by Joseph Alfred Lamy, weighing 55.0 grams. The bow feels remarkably comfortable and secure in the hand, with a wonderfully springy stick that responds quickly and makes articulation feel effortless.

The round stick is fashioned from pernambuco and fitted with an ebony and ivory faceplate. The ebony frog is mounted in sterling silver with Parisian eyes, while the ebony adjuster is finished with a full silver cap. Whalebone lapping and a leather thumb grip complete the bow. The bow is in very good condition.

The Maker

Joseph Alfred Lamy (1850–1919), commonly known as Lamy père, was one of the leading French bow makers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Born in Mirecourt, he trained with Charles Claude Nicolas Husson before moving to Paris, where he joined the workshop of François Nicolas Voirin. After Voirin’s death in 1885, Lamy established his own workshop and developed a highly successful independent career. His finest bows are admired for their elegant workmanship, refined proportions, and excellent playing qualities, placing him among the most important makers of his generation.
