The Violin Bow

A fine early violin bow by Joseph Alfred Lamy, dating from shortly after he established his independent workshop in Paris. The round stick is fashioned from pernambuco and fitted with an ebony and ivory faceplate. The ebony frog is mounted in sterling silver with Parisian eyes. A later ebony adjuster is fitted with two silver rings and a pearl end dot.

The bow is in very good condition, with a later adjuster.

The Maker

Joseph Alfred Lamy (1850–1919), commonly known as Lamy père, was one of the leading French bow makers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Born in Mirecourt, he trained with Charles Claude Nicolas Husson before moving to Paris, where he joined the workshop of François Nicolas Voirin. After Voirin’s death in 1885, Lamy established his own workshop and developed a highly successful independent career. His finest bows are admired for their elegant workmanship, refined proportions, and excellent playing qualities, placing him among the most important makers of his generation.
