The Violin
Dating from circa 1810, this handsome French violin by Joseph Falaise is distinguished by its beautiful one-piece maple back, marked by medium-wide flames running horizontally across the wood. The ribs and scroll are fashioned from maple with a tighter, more deeply figured flame. Its two-piece spruce top features broad grain with pronounced winter lines, while the red-brown varnish reflects the characteristic appearance of French instruments from this period. The violin remains in very good condition.
Its tone is warm, rich, and exceptionally even across every string and register. The instrument offers a full and satisfying voice with excellent tonal consistency, making it an especially rewarding violin to play.
The Maker
Joseph Falaise was a French violin maker associated with the late eighteenth and early nineteenth-century tradition of instrument making. His violins were influenced by classical Italian models, particularly those of Amati and Stradivari, while retaining the distinctive construction and varnish characteristics of the French school. Surviving examples of his work are relatively uncommon and are appreciated for their individual character, attractive woods, and mature tonal qualities. Instruments bearing his name represent an interesting period in the development of French violin making before the rise of the great nineteenth-century workshops.
